Big Walk and Wheel Round Up

12th Apr 2022

For the second year, the Big Walk and Wheel proved to be a great success! St Ronan's was the top large school in the Fermanagh and Omagh area. We placed 4th in Northern Ireland and 42nd out of 2,440 schools across the UK! On average, 86.88% of our pupil population participated in active travel or physical activity each day of the event.

The effort put in by pupils and volunteers during the two weeks was magnificent!

Many pupils chose to walk, cycle or scoot to school individually whilst over 100 others chose to make the 1km trip from Castle Park as part of the daily walking group. On top of all this active travel, many classes made the most out of the excellent weather and got outside for extra PE and the daily mile.

It was great to see children arriving to school relaxed and with a smile on their face 😀. A huge thank you to all pupils, staff, PTFA members, school crossing patrols and parents for their participation in a wonderful event. Thank you to Castle Park Centre for use of their car park and to Swift's Eurospar for helping with crossing at the shop.

Our active travel efforts don't stop here though. As we approach the final term (fingers crossed for some sunshine!), pupils are encouraged to walk and cycle to as often as they can, provided it is safe. P6 pupils will also be taking part in an after-school cycle club with our Sustrans officer, Ann-Marie.

St Ronan's will now go through an assessment for the Sustrans Gold Award before the end of the school year! Stay tuned as we continue our active travel journey!
