Mathemagicians!

15th Oct 2020

As it was Maths Week Ireland, P5 took part in a number of different activities to help consolidate some of what we have learned this year. Activities included:

Emoji Maths - children had to find the numerical value of different emojis to complete calculations

Rolling Addition and Subtraction - In pairs, pupils had to roll a die ten times and add each number they landed on together. The pupil who had the closest answer to 50 was the winner! We also used subtraction were children started with the number 50 and had to get as close to zero by subtracting the number they rolled

Muscle Maths - In this we combined our PE and Maths skills. The first game we played was rob the nest with numbered milk cartons. Pupils ran out and lifted one milk carton each to bring back to their team. When all milk cartons were gone from the nest children were given three minutes to make a pre selected number using the numbers they collected and the four number operations.

Multiplication Circuits - For this, a pupil was selected to pick a circuits type exercise at random. They were then given a multiplication question to answer within five seconds by Mr Foy. If they got the answer right, the class would only have to do the exercise for how many reps or seconds the answer was equal to. E.g. press ups and 3 x 5 = 15 press ups. If the answer was incorrect, Mr Foy was able to choose just how long the exercise lasted for! Fortunately, for the class everyone was brilliant at their multiplication.
