P7 got their instructional writing topic off to a strange start! Puzzled pupils arrived to school equipped with toothbrushes which they then used as part of their writing lesson.

Pupils completed a 'cold write' on the topic 'Teaching a Toddler to Brush Their Teeth'. They were given a maximum of ten instructions to write which would help their partner (the Toddler!) how to brush their teeth safely and effectively.

Missed or unclear instructions resulted in some children following the instructions 'word for word' and ending up putting toothpaste on the wrong end of the toothbrush, forgetting to spit the toothpaste out and not turning the tap off!

Thankfully,  we were able to regroup and decide on a clear and concise set of instructions that would avoid any chaos in future!

Pupils then set about developing a set of instructions that would enable an injured person to stand up from a ground position as well as coaching their teacher through the various instructions and coaching points of the punt pass (No lights were broken!). Definitely a few future Dentists, Physiotherapists and Coaches in this bunch!

We now look forward to improving our instructional writing skills by focusing on the themes of Christmas and Science. We also plan to incorporate humour and creativity into our instructional writing through the topic 'How NOT to make Christmas Dinner!'
